EU’s Gender Wage Gap Debate: Long Live The Misogyny

“Woman should earn less than men because they are weaker, smaller and less intelligent.”

said Janusz Korwin-Mikke, during a recent European Parliament session. Korwin-Mikke, founder of the right-wing Coalition for the Renewal of the Republic party, was confronted by a female member of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ party, Iratxe Garcia Perez.

The video documenting the interaction between Korwin-Mikke and Perez shows a fiery retort by Perez after the aforementioned statement.

Perez replied with:

“I know it hurts and worries you that today women can sit in this house and represent European citizens with the same rights as you. I am here to defend all European women from men like you.”

The EU’s Parliament leader has initiated an investigation into Korwin-Mikke’s bluntly sexist comments where the Polish libertarian could possibly face parliamentary consequences as the comments are argued to have violated EU’s parliament protocols.

Rule 11 of the EU Parliament’s guidelines is summarized towards the emphasis of conduct based on mutual respect, absent defamatory, racist or xenophobic language or behavior in debates.

Based on a CNN report on the matter, Korwin-Mikke has been previously investigated about an issue of incitement to rape in 2014 and has previously argued for women to lose voting rights. The libertarian right-winger seems to have quite the infamous reputation in politics; a Breitbart article in late 2016 stated Korwin-Mikke’s strong opposition towards immigration in Europe as the Polish politician described the case as an “Islamic invasion”.
